What is serial number tracking?
Serial number tracking assigns a unique identifier to every individual unit you make, rather than to a group of them. That single number becomes the thread that ties a finished product to the material lots it was built from, the operators who worked on it, the machines it ran through, the tests it passed and the customer it shipped to.
It is the highest resolution form of traceability. Batch tracking tells you which group a product belongs to. Serial number tracking tells you about that exact unit, and nothing else.
If a customer rings up with a fault and quotes a number off the plate, you should be able to pull up that unit's full history in seconds. That is the test. If you cannot, you do not have serialisation, you have paperwork.
How it works
How serial number tracking works in production
Serialisation is not one action, it is a chain of captures. Break the chain at any point and the history has a hole in it.
1. Allocate the number
A serial number is issued at the first operation or at final assembly, depending on how much of the build you need to account for. It is printed as a barcode, QR code or RFID tag so it can be scanned rather than typed.
2. Bind materials to it
As material is issued to the job, its batch or lot number is recorded against the serial. This is what turns a supplier problem into a list of affected units instead of a guess.
3. Capture as it moves
Every scan at every operation writes the operator, machine, time and result against that serial. Test data, torque figures and calibration records attach here too.
4. Record where it went
Despatch links the serial to a customer, an order and a date. That is the forward half of traceability, and it is the half most factories are missing.

The value of serialisation shows up on your worst days, not your best ones. Most manufacturers justify it on one of these four.
Recalls stop being existential
A defect traced to one material lot affects the units built from that lot. Without serial data, the safe answer is to recall everything, and that is the answer that costs the money.
Audits stop eating weeks
Aerospace, medical and automotive auditors ask for unit-level history. Producing it from a system takes minutes. Producing it from paper takes people off the job for days.
Warranty claims get challenged
Serial history tells you whether a failed unit was actually yours, whether it was in warranty and whether it was used as intended.
Quality problems get found earlier
Failure patterns cluster by serial range, shift, machine or material lot. You can only see the cluster if the data is attached to the unit.

When do you need serial number tracking?
If any of the following are true, serialisation stops being a nice to have and becomes the thing that keeps your approvals.
- You supply into aerospace or defence and have to prove unit-level provenance.
- You make medical equipment and need to satisfy UDI and post-market surveillance rules.

Serial number tracking questions, answered
What is the difference between serial number tracking and batch tracking?
Batch tracking records which group of material a product came from. Serial number tracking records the history of one individual unit. Batch tracking narrows a recall to a group, serial tracking narrows it to the exact items affected.
Do I need serial number tracking to be ISO certified?
ISO 9001 requires traceability appropriate to your product and risk, not serialisation specifically. Sector standards go further. AS9100 in aerospace and ISO 13485 in medical devices both expect unit-level traceability for critical parts.
When should a serial number be allocated?
It depends how much of the build you need to account for. Allocating at the first operation captures the full genealogy including raw material. Allocating at final assembly is simpler but you lose the earlier history. Most regulated products allocate early.
Can I serialise some products and batch track others?
Yes, and most manufacturers should. Serialise the high value, safety critical or field serviced lines. Batch track consumables and bulk material. Applying serialisation to everything usually costs more in capture effort than it returns.
What happens to serial data when a unit is reworked?
The rework should be written against the same serial as a new event, not overwrite the original record. A serial history is an append-only log. If rework erases what came before, the audit trail is worthless.
How long do I need to keep serial number records?
Long enough to cover your product life and your liability, which in aerospace and medical devices can be decades. Check your sector requirement and your customer contracts, because contracts often demand longer retention than regulation does.
